Part 1 – The Promise of Michigan’s Great Start Initiative

Early childhood education and development has become a national priority as research continues to show how it provides a foundation for a child’s life. In Michigan our Great Start Initiative is aimed at doing just that, by building a system that will make a difference in the first years of life. Join veteran journalist Christy McDonald as she delves into this statewide initiative and learns its history and direction. Michigan’s unique Great Start statewide network will be discussed, highlighting Great Start communities’ work that is making a difference for children and their families. We’ll also learn how the Great Start to Quality program impacts you, the latest research on child development, and why early childhood investment is fundamental to a strong and vital Michigan economy.

Part 2 – The People of Great Start

Join us as we take a look at the people behind Michigan’s Great Start initiative. Veteran journalist Christy McDonald talks with the many people and groups working to support school readiness through early childhood development including Governor Snyder. We’ll hear how early childhood’s big three — the Early Childhood Investment Corporation, the Michigan Department of Education – Office of Great Start and the Children’s Leadership Council of Michigan are working for a strong Michigan by ensuring today’s children are ready for tomorrow’s workforce. And we’ll learn how EVERY VOICE, EVERY CHILD has gone viral through the Michigan Sandbox Party as Michigan residents are using their voices to ensure that young children are among the state’s top priorities.

Yes! I work in a school and I can’t agree with this more!

This should be framed and given to everyone at the hospital when they leave with their new baby.

New St. Paul Head Start Agency in Detroit had 2 very special visitors today! Governor Whitmer and Ryan the Lion joined the students and staff of the school for story time and a reading of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Following the entertaining reading from the Governor (including encouragement to eat fruits and veggies!), the teachers shared some of the impressive work that the students were doing in the classroom. From reimagining the big bad wolf as a nice wolf, to teaching sign language to a group school sing, it is very clear that the team at New St. Paul Head Start Agency is doing amazing work as early childhood educators. As we round out March and the celebration of Reading Month the Governor encouraged the children to continue reading not just this month but every month – we could not agree more!

I had a chance to sit with Governor Whitmer following to discuss the critical role that professionals caring for infant, toddlers and preschool play. It was inspiring to be at New St. Paul Head Start Agency and we celebrate these professionals today and every day! And you can celebrate Infant, Toddler and Preschool Professionals in your life too!
