Making School Matter – University Liggett School & The Academic Research Program

PREMIERED MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 2020 AT 7:30PM ET

How can we make school matter to kids? Making School Matter – University Liggett School & The Academic Research Program is the culmination of a four-year documentary project that followed four students attending University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. All high school-aged students at University Liggett School participate in the Academic Research Program, a four-year curriculum that takes a subject they are passionate about and turns it into an in-depth research project that teaches them the skills they will need to prepare for success in college. Over four years the students mature, their interest change and develop, and by graduation they have become experts on topics that could end up changing the world.

Together with the Michigan Department of Education, REL Midwest found that about 61,000 teachers are certified to teach in the state but choose not to. Why?

In a new documentary, REL Midwest and Detroit Public Television explore why certified teachers in Michigan aren’t teaching and what can be done to bring them back into the classroom.

Join us to watch our latest documentary “Teachers who aren’t teaching: Who are they and how do we get them back?”, followed by a live panel discussion.
