Detroit Public TV Wins NETA Award For Excellence in Education

For more than 50 years, PBS KIDS has provided broadcast educational content to millions of young children.  Detroit Public TV seeks to complement broadcast with on-the-ground efforts engaging the adults who surround those children – parents, caregivers, and educators – with skills, knowledge and additional PBS KIDS resources to encourage learning.

We are proud to announce that Detroit Public Television’s work in local neighborhoods has been recognized as the best in public television.  Detroit PBS KIDS received the first-ever national NETA Award for Overall Excellence in Education.   The award – considered the highest award in public broadcasting — opened the NETA 2020 Conference, held in conjunction with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Thought Leader Forum in Arlington, Virginia.

The award recognizes Detroit PBS KIDS and the station’s education team for a year-long effort working with parents, caregivers, and educators in the Brightmoor neighborhood in Detroit, as well as with early childhood education partners across Southeast Michigan.   The station conducted workshops with parents, early STEM workshops with entire families, a variety of professional learning opportunities for early childhood educators, and partnered with community organizations on a variety of neighborhood-based events.

The education team and DPTV’s One Detroit initiative also teamed up to broadcast a special roadshow – originating from Brightmoor’s City Covenant Church — exploring the health and well-being of children growing up in neighborhoods where many residents experience trauma, high levels of poverty, and limited opportunities.

What sets apart the work of Detroit PBS KIDS is the station’s focus on building deep community relationships and understanding of neighborhood needs.  The work relies community-based partners – familiar faces and organizations – who work with the education team to design a series of events, workshops, and learning opportunities to address local needs.

In short, DPTV’s work is focused on supporting positive outcomes for children – employing our unique ability to deliver high-quality, trusted PBS KIDS content to every home, every hour of every day, so that all children are ready for school, ready to read, and ready for life.
