The Opportunity:

We are actively seeking dynamic and diverse team member to join us in the role of Social Video Specialist in Wixom, MI, in a hybrid work structure, working in-office one day a week and remotely for the rest.

Detroit Public Television (DPTV) and its Michigan Learning Channel (MLC) initiative seek a creative, energetic, and strategic individual to join our team as a Social Video Specialist. This position is a grant-funded, two-year position with the potential for renewal.

Overview: Detroit Public Television and Michigan Learning Channel will soon be launching American Graduate: Jobs Explained, a digital content initiative that will leverage public media’s unique local/national infrastructure to bring tools and resources to high school students in our area that will help them discover well-paying, in-demand careers, and industries which may not require traditional educational pathways.

Jobs Explained goals are to:

  • Expose teens to in-demand careers and industries identified by the US and State Departments of Labor that provide opportunities for advancement, training, and a livable wage
  • Reach teens on the social media platforms where they most frequently consume content, including TikTok & Instagram Reels
  • Support the community by addressing local employment needs, with public media stations working as trusted conveners, storytellers, and leaders
  • Enhance existing workforce development initiatives and build on the success of previous public media workforce development initiatives
  • Empower public media stations to embrace new production models and digital platforms to create content for, with, and by youth
  • Create sustained impact and transformation by connecting students, employers, and workforce development programs 

Essential Functions

Jobs Explained Social Video Specialist will work closely with the project team at Detroit Public Television and Michigan Learning Channel to develop, curate, and create videos that inform teens on TikTok and other social media platforms about in-demand careers and career pathways they likely haven’t considered. The emphasis for DPTV/MLC’s scope of this national project will be on the Information Technology industry. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience writing, filming, producing, sourcing information, collecting digital assets, publishing, editing digital video and have a deep familiarity with vertical video content. We are looking for someone who is responsive to data and knows how to read and respond to content metrics. If you are an enthusiastic digital content creator who loves public media and has a deep understanding of content that engages young audiences, we want to talk with you. 

Key Responsibilities include:

Research and Development (20%)

    • Develop and maintain responsive social media strategy for Jobs Explained initiative, including recommending a “brand” or “vibe” which sets DPTV/MLC content apart and helps to build trust; align strategy with national Jobs Explained goals and other station content
    • Attend trainings, workshops, and meetings in alignment with Jobs Explained grant deliverables
    • Identify major social media accounts in education, public media, and career exploration at the national, state, and local levels to follow, learn from, and interact with
    • Ongoing research and fact checking in education and workforce fields

Content Creation and Audience Engagement (70%)

    • Produce short-form video content to support education around IT/technology jobs and other specific content identified in grant deliverables
    • Post 3x/week on TikTok and Instagram Reels; share content with other DPTV and MLC team members for posting across additional platforms and in newsletters
    • Collaborate with MLC statewide engagement team to incorporate diverse content in posts
    • Develop consistent engagement by responding to comments and following and engaging with other relevant accounts
    • Work to establish Jobs Explained: Technology account as “influencer” by participating in trends, interacting with top accounts, and seeking out partnerships for content creation and sharing
    • Work directly with MLC Youth Advisory Council and DPTV Business Advisory Council Jobs Explained working groups to determine content and engagement strategies

Administration and Analytics (10%)

    • Evaluate social data analytics to influence strategy; communicate audience insights to MLC program director and engagement team
    • Track data and deliverables for grant reporting; communicate with local and national stakeholders and partners 


  • Social media management: content creation, calendaring, and metrics reporting
  • Social media engagement: grow social media followings on multiple platforms
  • Vision and ability to establish and maintain a “brand voice” that fits within the framework of the project
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including video storytelling to engage young audiences
  • Project management: tracking and fulfillment of grant deliverables
  • Collaborative and team-oriented 


  • 2 years of experience creating content, including video production, copywriting, and audience engagement
  • 2 years of experience using TikTok with general knowledge about all social media trends and impact
  • 2 years of experience working with data analytics, social media algorithms, and evolving media landscapes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of K-12+ education landscape and trends, including 21st century skill development and career education, particularly in the technology fields preferred
  • Demonstrated experience doing community work, inclusive of teens, tweens, and young adults preferred

Applicants with experience in content production for young people, promotions, digital design, education, or social improvement projects are strongly encouraged to apply.

Physical Demands:

Must be able to record and edit video.

Work Environment:

Hybrid, including remote work with occasional in-office and/or work onsite at event locations. The selected applicant may be occasionally required to participate in evening and weekend events.
