The Opportunity 

We are currently actively recruiting for a Career Education Program Consultant position in Wixom, MI. 

Detroit Public Television’s (DPTV) new initiative, “The Future of Work” aims to connect young people and job seekers to career exploration and preparation resources, with the goal of guiding middle and high school students and young adults to graduate ready to pursue one of the “Four E’s”: Employment, Enrollment, Enlistment, or Entrepreneurship. 

While education content will appear under the umbrella of the Michigan Learning Channel (MLC), the Future of Work initiative is also aligned to DPTV’s journalism team, sparking conversations within the business community about current workforce trends and opportunities. 

This role will serve as a subject matter expert on career education, working with the MLC and DPTV Education team to select and compile high-quality content for distribution on broadcast and digital platforms as well as supporting creation of classroom-ready and self-guided career preparation collateral materials. This position will also support the One Detroit journalism team, supporting the team by identifying key workforce trends, recommending guest experts, and arranging interviews. 

Consultant will assist the station develop and maintain key partnerships throughout the state of Michigan with people and organizations important to career education and workforce development. Those organizations include educational entities (the K-12 system, CTE training centers, community colleges and universities), government agencies (Michigan WORKS! and MEDC), as well as corporate, union, and non-profit organizations. 

Consultant will collaborate with the Director, Strategic Initiative Planning and the Senior Vice President Strategy and Community Engagement on determining Future of Work initiative strategy. 

This is a grant-funded temporary contract position, but it could be converted into a full-time role with sufficient growth in the project funding. 

Essential Functions 


  • Develop a multi-platform content strategy and vision to for career exploration, soft skills, and career pathways content supporting Michigan K-12 students and young adults in discovering and pursuing fulfilling post- secondary options. 
  • Source and review content for use on the Michigan Learning Channel’s broadcast and digital platforms, with support of the Content Specialist. 
  • Be a voice for public media in career education. Write blog posts and potentially appear in videos sharing expertise and adding context to the content selected from partner organizations. 
  • Work directly with the Producer, Michigan Learning Channel to develop engaging instructional programs about career skills, collaborating with relevant educational experts and existing curriculum when appropriate. 
  • Ensure the quality of content across multiple platforms that aligns with the goals and strategy of the initiative. 
  • Ensure compliance with established policies for content and underwriting 


  • Work with partner organizations to discover and curate high-quality content that can be shared and distributed by the Michigan Learning Channel and Detroit Public Television. 
  • Support building of organizational relationships with education leaders, workforce development agencies, association leadership, and other key statewide players. 
  • Contribute to an active partner database.


  • Consultant may be asked to support engagement programs or events, such as student workshops, focus groups, or townhall conversations. 
  • Work with the marketing and engagement teams to promote and amplify the impact of Future of Work programming.


  • Understanding of career preparation within the K-12 educational system and how to support students, teachers, and families in career exploration, skill development, and connecting to opportunities 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; including clear storytelling skills 
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with diverse communities to engage a range of voices and to create
    culturally relevant programming 
  • Excellent people skills, able to work effectively with other members of a team and other departments as well as
    with prospects and existing stakeholders 
  • Ability to provide constructive criticism to contributors and volunteers to achieve high quality deliverables 
  • Ability to manage projects and resources effectively 
  • Ability to contribute creative ideas 
  • Excellent organizational ability with strong attention to details 
  • Ability to complete tasks within budget and time constraints and prepare necessary reports 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Development, or related field of study 
  • Experience working with youth or young adults in a career or college advising setting 
  • 5+ years of experience writing in a professional capacity 
  • Experience working directly with the business community or workforce development agencies a plus 
  • Experience in curriculum development or instructional design a plus 
  • Ability to travel statewide on occasion 


  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Human Development, or related field of study
  • Experience working with youth or young adults in a career or college advising setting
  • 5+ years of experience writing in a professional capacity
  • Experience working directly with the business community or workforce development agencies a plus
  • Experience in curriculum development or instructional design a plus
  • Ability to travel statewide on occasion
