Detroit Public TV (DPTV) is Michigan’s largest and most watched television station serving Southeastern Michigan, and serves the most diverse public television audience in the country. The Opportunity 

We are currently actively recruiting for our Programming Specialist position located in Wixom, MI. 

The Programming Specialist reviews content from independent producers to determine its suitability for use on any of Detroit Public Televisions broadcast channels and/or streaming platforms, making recommendations to programming leadership. After approval, this position will acquire, process, and clear the content for use on DPTV’s platforms, collecting all necessary information to support marketing, promotion, and educational goals. 

Essential Functions 

Content Evaluation and Tracking 

  • Evaluate video materials against established PBS and DPTV production standards, including but not limited to content considerations 
  • Understand how available content fits into content priorities for the station and how it aligns to overall station goals and initiatives 
  • In the case of material under consideration for the Michigan Learning Channel, identify the content’s educational value, age and grade level appropriateness, and alignment with Michigan Educational Standards 
  • Maintain database of videos and supplemental materials available for use 
  • Ensure programming content adheres to DPTV’s and PBS’s editorial and funder recognition guidelines 
  • Help track program ratings for reports and measuring reach and impact of a show or series 

Partner Management 

  • Actively seek partnerships with local organizations, PBS member stations, and independent producers and producing organizations who have content that could be used on DPTV platforms 
  • Manage relationships with regular contributors and key partners 
  • Secure contracts, rights clearances, and content release letters, maintaining a database of rights deadlines and requesting renewals when needed 
  • Work with partner organizations to gather all related program assets including logos, program descriptions, publicity photos, and supplemental educational materials 
  • Report metrics on views and usage of partner materials for stewardship reports 
  • Work with outside producers and production houses to process footage/video licensing requests 

Content Scheduling 

  • Draft the monthly schedule for the Michigan Learning Channel approximately 60 days in advance 
  • Work with ProTrack and the Programming team to address any issues with permissions or content availability 
  • Support the MLC Program Director and MLC Lead Editor to make sure new programs are ready to be aired as scheduled 
  • Coordinating supplemental resources and materials with the marketing and digital media teams for promotion as well as website and social media updates 

Skills 

  • Attention to detail 
  • Adaptability: A quick learner who is able to learn new software and procedures efficiently and accurately 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and follow up appropriately with internal and external stakeholders 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Experience working with youth in an educational setting preferred 
  • Experience working with media or video preferred 
  • Familiarity with PBS, PBS Kids programs, and PBS Learning Media preferred 

Qualifications 

  • Proficient with software, including MS Office suite 
  • Experience working with contracts and other legal documents 
  • Demonstrated understanding of educational media for young people of different ages 
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in an office or clerical environment 

Physical Demands 

Must be able to type and work in a typical office environment. Occasional travel may be required. 

Work Environment 

Individual is exposed to a typical office setting with computer equipment and video monitors. A portion of the work may be accomplished remotely.
