Detroit Public TV (DPTV) is Michigan’s largest and most watched television station serving Southeastern Michigan, and serves the most diverse public television audience in the country. DPTV is also the state’s only community- licensed station, meaning it operates independent of any educational, government or other institution. Its funding comes from the community it serves.

Each week more than two million people watch our four broadcast channels, and nearly 200,000 people listen to our radio station, WRCJ 90.9 FM for classical days and jazzy nights. The Opportunity

We are actively pursuing a dynamic and diverse team member to join us in the role of Community Education Specialist. The station offices are in Wixom, MI.

The Community Education Specialist plans, conducts, and documents virtual and in-person trainings and workshops for families, caregivers, and/or educators. They will help communicate learning materials and activities from PBS, the Michigan Learning Channel, and other sources to further the educational goals of each group. A key role is to facilitate trusted relationships and partnerships within the education community at all levels, but especially with preschool and K-12 organizations, educators, and caregivers.

Essential Functions

  • Independently conduct trainings and workshops with established and new community partners
  • Maintain and develop collaborative relationships with local community organizations
  • Implement content and resources virtually and/or in person to support teacher professional development, virtual family workshops, and PBSKIDS content (associated with the state grant Ready to Learn) as it becomes available
  • Participate in evaluation of engagement efforts, in collaboration with research partners and under guidance from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the Public Broadcasting System (PBS)
  • Build awareness of project activities among the Target Audience and key stakeholders

In service of these objectives, the Community Education Specialist will:

  • Complete monthly interim narrative reports;
  • Participate in project meetings;
  • Conduct facilitator trainings at partner sites with parents, caregivers and educators; and
  • Implement/Support education content through workshops (including RTL, MLC and PBS resources)
  • Organize and coordinate packing and distribution of educational materials into all communities served
  • Coordinate details and materials with partners to set up and schedule workshops
  • Serve as an ambassador of DPTV and PBS to partner sites and targeted communities by creating relationships of support and establishing sustainable practices to give us visibility on site supporting teachers and parents with local and national resources
  • Other duties as assigned, including participation in station fundraising events

Skills

  • Highly effective abilities to develop partner relationships; ability to establish rapport and trust with a wide range of people
  • Commitment to quality programs and data driven program evaluation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator able to communicate with parents and children in at-risk communities
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Ability to troubleshoot technologies and address user frustration using tablets, computers, and smart boards, etc.
  • Persistence and follow through to coordinate meetings with partners
  • Work independently and be highly self-directed and self-motivated

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required
  • Experience working in Detroit with at-risk communities preferred
  • Classroom experience required
  • Ability to travel within Southeast Michigan using personal vehicle; occasional overnight travel is possible
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations
  • Must have reliable transportation and be willing to work varied hours

Physical Demands

Must be able to type and work in a typical office environment as well as within schools and early childhood educational settings. Must be able to travel throughout Southeast Michigan.
