DETROIT (March 22, 2021) – Detroit Public TV’s (DPTV) Board of Trustees has elected as its new chair Timothy Nicholson, the chief operating officer of PVS Chemicals, Inc. He replaces Hannan Lis, principal and chief operating officer of The WW Group, Inc., who served two years and will remain on the board as a trustee.

The board also elected the following officers:

  • Chair-Elect: Donna Murray-Brown, president and CEO, Michigan Nonprofit Association
  • Treasurer: Christine A. Sing, principal, Rehmann Robson
  • Secretary: Sandra K. Ennis, retired, DTE

“We are truly fortunate to have such a gifted board at Detroit Public TV, with a deep understanding and commitment to the community,” said Rich Homberg, president and CEO of DPTV. “Tim has been actively involved with Hannan in the great work of the board as it has helped to steer the organization through the challenges – and the opportunities – of the past year.

“He and his team will continue to expand our service to the people of Metro Detroit, as we come out of the pandemic and advance toward a brighter and more equitable future.”

Nicholson joined the DPTV board in 2011, serving on the executive committee since 2017 and chairing the compensation and human relations committee. His company, PVS Chemicals, has been a generous supporter of DPTV.

“I am honored to lead such a distinguished, skilled and committed board as the one we have at Detroit Public TV,” said Nicholson. “Emerging from the COVID-19 crisis, with the rest of the community, our organization finds itself in excellent condition.

“Together, the staff and board are poised to enact our new strategic plan, which will position us to accomplish even more to serve the people of Southeast Michigan.”

As COO of PVS Chemicals, Inc., Nicholson manages a 75- year-old firm, which has approximately 1,200 employees and is headquartered in Detroit.  It provides “Chemistry for Daily Life” by offering the basic chemical building blocks used to make contemporary life possible.

He is an active member of the community, sitting on a number of nonprofit boards besides Detroit Public TV, including the Downtown Detroit Partnership, Citizens Research Council of Michigan and the Keewaydin Foundation in Vermont.

An avid outdoorsman, Nicholson has spent nearly one thousand nights in wilderness settings.  He is also a triathlete, runner and avid skier.

Having earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Montana, he went on to receive an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Chair-Elect Donna Murray-Brown is the president and CEO of the Michigan Nonprofit Association (MNA), a statewide membership organization that achieves its mission through advocacy, training, technology services and civic engagement.  MNA is dedicated to nonprofits and to the communities they serve by promoting anti-racism and social justice.

Murray-Brown is the past chair of the National Council of Nonprofits and was appointed to Northern Michigan University’s Board of Trustees by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

She earned a master’s degree in community development from the University of Detroit Mercy and a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Central State University. She also holds certifications in corporate community affairs from Boston College and strategic perspectives in nonprofit management from Harvard Business School.

The leadership of Nicholson, Murray-Brown and the rest of the board will drive growth and expansion of the station’s core initiatives, including a keen focus on the new Michigan Learning Channel and its ability to provide unprecedented resources and educational support to every student, parent and teacher in the state through free, over-the-air broadcast access and various digital platforms.
