DETROIT (Nov. 30, 2020) – Detroit Public Television’s Board of Trustees elected Rick Notter, the vice president of the Individual Business Unit at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, as its newest member.
“It is an honor and a privilege to welcome Rick to our board,” said Rich Homberg, president and CEO of Detroit Public Television (DPTV). “With his deep background in and understanding of marketing and the media, he will be a key contributor to our ongoing efforts to engage the diverse communities we serve and tell the unfolding story of Detroit and Southeast Michigan.”
During his nearly 10 years at BCBSM, Notter has served in various sales and marketing roles before being promoted to vice president in 2019.
He graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a degree in Communications and Journalism, which led him into a career as a TV anchor and health reporter in Evansville where he won multiple awards for his work from the Associated Press, Society of Professional Journalists, Indiana Psychological Association, Indiana Diabetic Association and the Radio and Television News Directors Association.
He moved to Bloomington, Ind., in the early ‘90s when he founded and became publisher of Inside Indiana, a sports publication focused on Indiana University Athletics, which he sold to Landmark Communications later that decade. While at Inside Indiana, he was a founding board member of the College Sports Publishers Association and won awards for his work from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Associated Press.
Following the sale of his business, Notter started a career in the insurance industry and has 20 years of experience in the Individual market, much of that time spent in the Blues system. Notter also served in a leadership position with the State Board of the Indiana State Association of Health Underwriters. While at WellPoint/Anthem, he was one of only 10 employees in the company selected to participate in its inaugural Leadership Mentoring Program.
Outside of the insurance industry, Notter has served as president of the Monroe County (Ind.) YMCA Board of Directors, past president of the Bloomington Elite chapter of Business Networking International and past board member of the Indiana State Association of Health Underwriters. Additionally, Notter is the author of “Sound Advice: Music’s Effect on Life, Health and Happiness.” The book received honors from Writer’s Digest and the Next Generation Indie Book Awards.
Notter is married to Josondra Notter and lives in Franklin, Mich. He has four children; Dr. Katherine Bline, a pediatric intensive care unit doctor at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio; Rich Notter, a musician, music teacher and band director in Cincinnati, Ohio; and Jude and Jori Notter, both of whom are big fans of PBS KIDS and live with Rick and Josondra.
