Gorillas: On the Trail of King Kong
When European explorers entered the depths of the Congo in the early 20th century, they encountered a species of gorilla so fierce and antagonistic that it spurred the menacing legend of King Kong, a threatening and destructive beast. Although King Kong's reputation has survived until present day, the modern day lowland gorillas of the Congo seem to exhibit gentler dispositions. Gorillas: On the Trail of King Kong, follows Sir David Attenborough as he explores the jungles of the Congo to better understand these giants.
Sir David Attenborough and his intrepid cameraman Gavin Thurston travel to central Africa to look for these lowland gorillas in a clearing called Mbeli Bai. In this secluded habitat, Attenborough and Thurston witness what has been missing from textbooks for years, accounts of peaceful gorillas in the Congo. In this sanctuary, gorillas gather for food and fresh water, but also, uniquely, to socialize with one another. The program follows individual gorillas through several seasons, remarkably showing how intimate and peaceful this large ape can be.
Gorillas: On the Trail of King Kong was filmed under the intense conditions of the Congo jungle. Stifling heat and humidity made the production process challenging, including rainstorms so drenching they caused fungus to grow on the camera's lens. However, the harsh working conditions paid off, and Attenborough and Thurston were rewarded with unprecedented footage and a better understanding of these gentle, intelligent and sophisticated creatures.
