Alberto Retana, Director of Community Outreach for the U.S. Department of Education, discusses the national urgency, successes and challenges of turning around under-performing schools, and federal resources available to help. He was interviewed by Detroit Public Television Feb. 24, 2010 following turnaround school summits at Detroit’s Cody Academies and Melvindale High School in suburban Melvindale, Michigan which are both in the midst of turnaround efforts. Students, parents, educators, community leaders and government officials joined the dialogue at both forums, hosted by the United Way of Southeastern Michigan’s Greater Detroit Education Venture Fund.
