2012 FIRST in Michigan
Robotics State Championship
Detroit Public TV captured the 2012 FIRST in Michigan Robotics State Championship at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti on April 14, 2012. The State Championship is a celebration of innovation as 64 of the 190 Michigan FIRST Robotics Competition teams showcase their remote controlled machines in a fierce battle of basketball.
The 2012 game is a modified version of basketball called Rebound Rumble. Machines score foam basketballs in hoops as quickly as possible and then drive to the middle of the court to earn bonus points by balancing a see-saw bridge. The more robots on the bridge, the more points earned.
FIRST, which stands for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology” has a progression of world-class STEM programs starting in elementary school and culminating with the flagship high school FIRST Robotics Competition.
