The speech was presented at the 2012 North American International Auto Show for a meeting of the Detroit Economic Club. Dr. Chu is introduced by Beth Chappel, President and CEO of the Detroit Economic Club and Lou Anna Simon, President of Michigan State University. A brief question and answer session follows his remarks.

Helping Our Cities and Metro Areas Achieve Their Economic Potential

For the past year, Business Leaders for Michigan, Public Sector Consultants, and The Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program have been analyzing Michigan’s metropolitan areas to determine how state policy can best prepare the state’s metros, its economic engines, for the next economy. We have found that Michigan’s metropolitan areas are particularly strong in the critical elements for the next economy.

On February 23, 2012, a panel of experts discussed a number of the key drivers of the next economy. They focus on how Michigan’s cities and metro areas stack up with their peers, and on what can be done to help strengthen our cities and metro areas and grow their economies. Panelists include:
