"The Taliban and Al Qaeda are preparing to launch new attacks," President George W. Bush said in a speech this past winter about the worsening security situation in Afghanistan. "Our strategy is not to be on the defense, but to go on the offense." In response to stepped up threats by the Taliban, Bush has pledged $10 billion more to stabilize and rebuild the country, and he's committed thousands more combat troops in the run up to what many expect to be the bloodiest fighting in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in fall 2001.
