African American Lives 2 Essay
|
Tracie White
Like many other African Americans, I do not know my family's history. I have longed to know my family history. Although, I don't know a lot, I know that my history is rich. I feel it in my bones. I am lucky that my relatives live well into their nineties and that I knew my great, great grandmother. As a result, I have heard some stories about my family's history, although the stories never go farther than the southern United States.
I am often jealous of other nationalities because they have been able to retain their language, customs, food, and family traditions as early generations immigrated to the United States. As an African American, I miss this.
I recently became a DPTV subscriber, and have always looked forward to the Black History series on PBS that airs every February. It would be an honor to be chosen as the recipient of the DNA kit from AfricanDNA and Detroit Public TV. It would provide a window into my history, and give my life meaning.
