The Ninth Annual Sphinx Competition Concert
Patrice Jackson, 2002 1st Place Laureate, Sphinx CompetitionThe Sphinx Competition, held yearly in Ann Arbor and Detroit, and recorded for broadcast by Detroit Public Television, is nationally acclaimed for showcasing young African American and Latino classical music string players. This year, for the first time, we shot the concert in HDTV - high definition widescreen television, with brilliant sound. We'll also air it on 90.9 WRCJ-FM, the new classical and jazz radio service we manage, and will take it to PBS for national distribution.
The 9th annual, week-long competition concluded with The Finals Concert on February 11 at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit, where the top three finalists of the Senior Division competed for placement, accompanied by the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Chelsea Tipton II. The Junior Division 1st Place Laureate and the Mosaic Singers of Detroit also performed.
