12th Street Tour

Last Updated by Will Glover on
We know it now as Rosa Parks Boulevard, running through some of Detroit’s west side neighborhoods.
But over near Clairmount Avenue, many residents there still call it 12th Street. It became Rosa Parks Boulevard in the 1970s. 12th and Clairmount is where a police raid on an after-hours party in 1967 changed the city’s history.
What was that neighborhood like back then? What’s there now?
Award-winning writer Marsha Music and renowned Detroit historian Jamon Jordan give us a tour, sharing their personal connections to that part of the city, brought to you by One Detroit special producer Samantha Nork.
On July 10th at the Joseph Walker Williams Center, Stephen Henderson hosted an intimate conversation about the 50th Anniversary of the events of 1967. Don't miss this important episode of American Black Journal on Sunday, July 23rd at 9:30 am.
