Other Screenings
Reentry screeningFor the past two years, Detroit Public Television has broadcast a variety of documentaries exploring the lives of prisoners and their families and focusing on what can happen when an ex-offender is released back into the community. To extend the impact of these documentaries and spark creative solutions to recidivism, Detroit Public TV has held a series of screenings and panel discussions at local universities bringing Social Work and Criminology students together with faith-based and secular social service agencies, clergy, corrections workers, ex-offenders and victims.
Since our first screening of What I Want My Words to Do to You in November, 2003, Detroit Public TV has also held screenings at Wayne State University, University of Detroit Mercy, Solanus Casey Center at St. Bonaventure Monastery, Schoolcraft College and Marygrove College. The documentaries viewed and discussed have been Manhood and Violence: Fatal Peril, One Down, Prison Lullabies, Omar and Pete, and A Justice that Heals.
What People Have Said
"These films were enlightening portrayals of what happens during and after being incarcerated. I feel these films have given me views to reflect on as a member of society."
-Viewer at Wayne State University screening
"This is an excellent program. I pray it will continue, and that God may bless as well as add on to your mission."
-Student, Marygrove College
"I feel that this video was a good way to let us who are, for the most part, going into a criminal justice field see from a prisoner's point of view the real struggle that people go through. This video helped me to relate to these men on a personal level and to really understand this isn't a movie, this is real life-they are real men not unlike the real people that live this everyday."
-Schoolcraft College student, about Omar and Pete
"Excellent example of restorative justice. Would that every parish would show and discuss it."
-Viewer, Solanus Casey Center screening
