NAS-Track Racing: Madison Bike Races
102: Race Two
Saturday, 7/10
By: Tim Rimer (7/9/04)
Every race was close and no team dominated, but Team Orange narrowly claimed first place last Friday in the second week of this year's NAS-Track Racing season.
Tony Bruley of Rochester Hills and Pio Apostoli of Toledo ended the night with 73 points overall, one point above the second and third place teams. It wasn't much, but it was enough to give them a slim first place victory in the second week of racing.
No team seemed to be consistent throughout the evening. Team Orange finished third place or lower in every race except the first sprint of the 100 Lap Madison, but still managed to earn the most points.
The only team with more than one first place finish, Dave Koesel, Livonia, and Dave Teal, Toledo, of Team Neon, took home fourth place with 70 points overall - only three points less than Team Orange.
Team White's Rob Akers, Garden City, and Andre Champoux, Ypsilanti, tied with Ray Dybowski, Waterford, and Ronnie Sink, Rochester, of Team Pink. The teams were awarded second and third place respectively after totaling points from last week's race.
Racers are paired into teams before each competition, but also earn points individually for a cumulative total that determines the best NAS-Track racer at the end of the season. The cumulative point standings after two races show Dave Koesel in first place with 156 points, followed by Rob Akers with 142 points and Ronnie Sink with 135 points. With 14-20 points available in one race alone, these standings are anything but stable.
